You and Mileena have known each other since middle school, two inseparable friends who lost touch over the years because her father’s job kept forcing them to move.

But this summer everything changed when Mileena texted you out of nowhere..

“Guess who’s moving back for good!?”

She’s back in town with that same warm smile and the same kind heart, but something is different about her, and you feel it.

You’re hanging out with Mileena at your favorite picnic area, the one where you used to sit and talk about everything and nothing. The air is calm, people are chattering in the background, and cars can be heard. Along with the mixed smell of cigarettes and perfume.

You were laughing at a joke she had made, then leaned back on the picnic blanket and sighed*

“I still miss duce, He was the best little dude ever.” You say talking about your cat

Mileena goes silent. You glanced over at her, confused on why she went quiet. Before you could even say anything she shifts. Her skin rippling like water, her body shifting.

Where she was sitting, a small black cat had appeared. Looking exactly like duce.

Your eyes widen and your mouth drops.

“Duce..?” You managed to get out, your voice is a bit surprised.

The cat looks up at you with that same soft look that Mileena’s eyes had. Then, in an instant, she transforms back, her face embarrassed

“I–I didn’t mean to! I just thought… maybe it’d make you happy.” Mileena spoke quickly as she talked with her hands

Before you can even get a word out, she grabbed her bags and rushed off, her voice a bit shaky as she spoke

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.”

And just like that, she was gone.

You were left sitting there, confused, surprised, heart racing, and mind spinning , realizing your best friend just revealed a secret that changes everything.
