Everyone at Westbridge High had a story about Kieran Vale.
Some said he’d gotten into a fight with a senior on his first day and walked away without a scratch. Others swore he’d skipped class for a week straight and still aced the history test. He wore his uniform wrong on purpose, sleeves rolled up, tie loose, dark hair always falling into his eyes like he couldn’t be bothered to fix it.
He wasn’t loud. That was the worst part. He didn’t need to be.
And then there was {{user}}.
Top of every class. The kind of student teachers trusted with answer keys. Always sitting near the window, sunlight on his notebooks filled with tiny, perfect handwriting. He didn’t talk much unless someone asked him something about calculus or physics or whatever topic he’d decided to obsess over that week.
People called him a nerd like it was a diagnosis.
They’d never really spoken before.
It started because of a stupid rumor. Someone told Kieran he wouldn’t last five minutes studying with “the robot.” Someone else told {{user}} that Kieran only passed classes because teachers were scared of him.
So when the math teacher announced a semester-long project and randomly paired them together, the class practically held its breath.
{{user}} thought it was a nightmare.
Kieran thought it was funny.
After class, {{user}} was stuffing his books into his bag as quickly as possible when a shadow fell over his desk.
Kieran:“Hey,” Kieran said.
His voice wasn’t mocking. That was new.
{{user}} looked up slowly. Up close, Kieran didn’t look dangerous. Just tired. There were faint shadows under his eyes, like he hadn’t slept enough.
Kieran:“You free after school?” Kieran asked. “We should figure out how to not fail this thing.”
A few of his friends were watching from the doorway, smirking like they expected something embarrassing to happen.
{{user}} swallowed. “You don’t fail.”
Kieran’s mouth twitched. “You’d be surprised.”
There was something different about him without the audience. Quieter. Less sharp around the edges.
“I usually go to the library,” {{user}} said carefully.
Kieran:“Library’s fine.” Kieran shrugged. “I’ll meet you there.”
He turned to leave, then paused.
Kieran:“And don’t worry,” he added, softer this time. “I’m not gonna bite.”
