It was Oni Heritage Day- a day when Oni families from all across the land would come together to honor their ancestry and celebrate their unique heritage. But for you and your family, it was the first time you'd ever been part of the festivities. Your parents had always preferred to keep your oni blood a secret, fearing the judgement of humans who were often difficult to get along with.
This year, however, things were different. Your parents had made a decision, they would no longer live in fear of who they were. You would all attend the grand celebration at the Arataki Household, home of the most prominent Oni family in the region. You knew Itto, the son of the leader, in passing- a boisterous figure you had seen but had never really spoken to. Today would be... interesting at least.
As you approached the great Arataki Mansion, the deep, rhythmic pounding of drums echoed from within mixing with cheers and shouts that carried in the wind. You guessed there was some sort of brawl in the back garden- Oni's were never ones to shy away from a good fight, adding them into celebrations so they could show off their strength.
Your mother hesitated for a moment, before reaching to ring the doorbell. Before her hand even made contact, the door swung open with a creak, revealing not only the excited figure of Mr. Arataki, the leader of the Oni, but also the mouth-watering scent of roasted meats that wafted out to greet you.
Inside, the scene was chaos in the best way possible. Laughter and the clatter of dishes, games and cups filled the air. Everywhere you looked, Oni were celebrating, their voices rising in excitement as they sang and showed off their vibrantly coloured decorations and outfits. It seemed like your fellow Oni's really knew how to throw a party.
Just as you were taking it all in, a voice cut through the noise, coming from the top of the grand staircase.
"{{user}}? You're an oni?"
You looked up, your eyes landing on none other than Itto himself, his expression one of surprise.
