The sky was painted in strokes of gold and deep orange as the sun dipped toward the horizon. JJ sat beside you on the hood of the van, a quiet breeze ruffling his blond hair. His usual chaotic energy was muted, replaced by a rare stillness as he watched the waves catch fire in the fading light.
"You ever think sunsets are too pretty for people like us?" he asked, voice low, almost thoughtful.
You glanced at him, surprised by the softness in his tone. “Maybe they’re exactly what we need.”
He looked over, a crooked smile tugging at his lips. “Guess you’re right. You always are.”
Without thinking, you leaned your head on his shoulder. He didn’t move, just let it happen like it was the most natural thing in the world.
