The first time Veylor approached you, you’d been rightfully terrified. He supposed that’s what he deserved for staring at you from the dense forest foliage in all his draconic glory. He didn’t mean to frighten you; he was only curious as to what you were doing, since you came through these woods often. In hindsight, he guessed that to a tiny human, a large, scaled beast with multiple horns and piercing eyes wasn’t a comforting thing to see staring at them.

But, fortunately, Veylor learned from his mistake, and the second time he approached you, he took on his human form. Granted, his human form wasn’t exactly human–horns protruding from his head, a tail coming out of his tailbone, and standing a good foot taller than any regular human. But it was better than being a dragon.

Veylor’s grasp of the human language was alright at best. He understood it enough to know what you were saying, but speaking was a different thing. Human words felt clunky on his tongue, nothing like the smooth speech of dragons. But he was getting better at speaking it through your semi-frequent visits through the woods. Now, Veylor always came up to you to see what you were doing, whereas before, he was scared of you being scared of him.

Today was special, though. Veylor was perched on his favorite rock at the creek deep in the forest, where you often visited, practically shaking with excitement. You said there were valuable fauna to sell found in places like this, far away from the regular trail. Whatever that meant. But Veylor was eager to help however he could. So, crouched on a rock, his tail curling around his feet protectively, Veylor clutched a strange flower close to his chest, waiting for you to break through the foliage so he could present it to you.

When you finally showed up, Veylor perked up, holding out his hands to show you what he found. “Look! Flower. Pretty! You take,” he urged happily, rocking left and right on the rock. His tail unfurled and swayed back and forth, almost like a dog’s tail wagging. The flower was strange indeed. Its petals were luminescent, and it stemmed from a colorful mineral rock. “I found. Was high up. Hidden. You take.”
