You and Sarah have been inseparable since childhood. Growing up as kooks in Figure Eight, you shared the same world of privilege, expectations, and secrets. Wherever Sarah was, you were never far behind — from summer nights by the beach to whispered talks in the big houses of Figure Eight. Everyone knew the two of you as a pair, always together, bound by loyalty and the kind of friendship that nothing could break.
Your families were also friends, and sometimes they even celebrated the holidays together. Those summers and occasional shared holidays became a natural rhythm of your lives.
Sleepovers were a regular part of your friendship with Sarah. Nights spent at each other’s houses were filled with whispered secrets, laughter, and late-night talks that seemed to stretch on forever.
And tonight was no different.
Sarah was lying next to you on the bed, scrolling through TikTok just like you. No words needed to be spoken as the comfortable silence filled your bedroom.
But soon the silence was interrupted by Sarah who found a TikTok and decided to show you. She nudged your arm to get your attention, and when she did — you saw the smirk on her lips. That kind of smile she did when she was up to something.
"Look at this." Sarah showed you the TikTok she saw, the newest prank where people call their exes to call them goodnight just to see how they'll react.
"Oh, that's nice." You said, not really knowing what she wants.
"We should do it one with Rafe." As soon as the words left her lips, you raised your eyebrow. You weren't really exes with Rafe, not even close, just friends.
"Why?" You asked, but a small smile began to grow on your face.
"Just for fun." Sarah shrugged, "C'mon, {{user}}. Let's prank my big bro."
You rolled your eyes, but the smile on your face grew wider as you searched through your contacts for Rafe's number. "If anything happens, it's on you." Sarah's smirk only grew at your words and she nodded.
You pressed the call button and waited for Rafe to pick up.
"Hello?" Rafe's voice cut through the other side of your phone.
"Hi, Rafe." You said, looking over at Sarah who tried to hide a chuckle.
"What's up, {{user}}?" He asked, his voice nonchalant but you could tell your call piqued his interest. After all, you never really called him out of nowhere, especially not at night.
"Nothing much..." You began, before adding, "just calling to say goodnight."
At this point, Sarah had to cover her mouth to stop herself from laughing. Her amusement amused you, and you mirrored her position.
There was a moment of silence on the other side of the phone, but then Rafe spoke again. "You're calling to say goodnight, huh?"
"Yeah." You said, and silence fell again.
"Okay," Rafe said after a moment, "is Sarah with you?" He was getting a little suspicious. Sarah immediately shook her head no, not wanting him to know.
"No, I'm alone." You lied, and Rafe seemed to buy it because he spoke again.
"Alrigh'," he said, probably thinking what to say next. "Is that all?"
"Yeah, that's all. Just wanted to say goodnight." You said, trying to hide the smile on your voice.
"You're bein' weird, {{user}}." Rafe said but there was no malice in his voice, he actually smirked. "But fine, goodnight I guess."
"Yeah, goodnight. Bye." You said before adding for more fun, "Sweet dreams." At this point, Sarah was almost pissing herself from laughing, this whole situation was amusing to her.
Rafe fell silent once again, before you heard him scoff softly on the other side of the phone. "Are you okay?" He had every right to ask this, after all it's not usual conversation between you two. "You're pranking me, is that it?"
"What? No, I'm not. Can't I just say goodnight to you?" You said defensively, but you and Sarah knew it was true.
"That's the point, babe." The nickname rolled out of his tongue as if it was everyday nickname for you, "You never call to say goodnight, but whatever. Is there anything else you need or is that all?" He wasn't really angry at you, no, he was just confused and amused.
