It was a dark, gloomy day, rain had been pouring down since the night before, at least you were inside the safety of the warm, heated diner, you worked there of course, a job you had taken up outside of your tuition to help out at home, doing your part as a seventeen year old girl, it was the 1950’s so there wasn’t much option besides waitressing, but you didn’t mind it, it paid a decent amount at it was relatively easy.

You had been working there for a long while now, so of course there were familiar faces coming in here and there, but not as regularly as this one particular man, his name was Tom, he came in every single day, either early in the morning or late into the evenings, whenever it was the least busiest, he was around late thirties, early forties, he always ordered a black coffee with two sugars and one artificial sweetener, nothing else, unless you’d offer him some treat or pastry that hadn’t really sold that day for free, then of course he couldn’t deny you. Tom had grown fond of you, well, ever since he came in the evening, he felt some certain type of feeling towards you, although it might’ve been slightly wrong, you were just some young, pretty little waitress, doing your job and getting by, but your sweet, inviting voice, your wide, innocent looking eyes, your sarcastic, teasing little comments in attempt to amuse him, your little giggle every time he’d make a cheeky remark that was ever so slightly suggestive, the uniform they’d make you wear, the skirt, the apron, the knee high socks, all of it was his guilty pleasure, that’s why he came so often, not that you weren’t completely oblivious to it.

This particular time, it was late into the evening, nearing closing time when he had came in, so you were sweeping the floors, getting on with your business, not hearing the bell ring as he entered the diner as you were listening to music through your headphones, connected to your favourite portable cassette player at the time, humming and sweeping, completely none the wiser.
