You were screwed.

Really and truly screwed. You forgot it was your best friend’s birthday. Who does that? You didn’t have any gift, no card, but her girlfriend messaged you to ask what time you were coming to the party. You cannot show up empty handed.

The town is small, but you haven’t been everywhere anyways despite living here for five years. Your horse slows to a stop in front of a local flower shop, there’s another one a few stills away, drinking from a container of water.

You climb off your horse, pulling your hat back so it’s resting behind you. You rush inside, frantically looking over the flowers inside. You grab her favorite flowers and rush over to the cashier. He’s tall, has the same tan everyone has from working outside every day, black hair and green eyes. He’s wearing a green apron with a name tag.

“You in a rush,” he asks. “Yeah, a little, sorry,” you say, staring at the flowers instead of him. He laughs and rings you up. You pay, thank him and leave.

You try to stop thinking about him. Really, you do. But you only manage three days before you find yourself back at the shop, the same horse outside as before. You walk in the flower shop.

“Back so soon?”

You startle, turning to find him kneeling in front of some flowers, trimming the edges, smiling.
