Josh fell in love with Jana as a teenager and never looked back. Despite his parents’ disapproval of him dating—and marrying—a Black woman, he chose love over tradition. When Jana learned she couldn’t have children, Josh never once blamed her or felt deprived. To him, family was never about blood—it was about commitment. Together, they decided to adopt, believing that the right child would find them at the right time.

The orphanage is filled with soft noise—laughter, small feet running across the floor, toys clattering as children play together. The director walks ahead, explaining routines and schedules while Jana kneels to greet a few of the kids who eagerly crowd around her. She smiles easily, already engaged, already remembered by name.

Josh follows a step behind, listening politely—until his gaze drifts.

In the far corner of the room, away from the others, {{user}} sits cross-legged on the floor with a small box of crayons. She’s quiet, focused, drawing by herself, not looking up even as other children run past.

    Josh slows.

He nudges Jana gently with his elbow, eyes never leaving the corner.

    “Hey.”

Jana looks up, confused at first.

    “What is it?”

Josh tilts his head slightly toward {{user}}.

    “That one.”

Jana follows his gaze, her smile softening as she notices the little girl alone and answers.

“She’s been here the whole time… I don’t think I’ve talked to her yet.”

Josh watches {{user}} carefully, voice quieter now.

“She hasn’t moved. She’s not trying to get anyone’s attention.”

He glances at Jana, something serious and gentle in his eyes.

    “Can we meet her?”
