Sometimes to be ignored could have its benefits. You didn't have the same pressure your older brother, Jon, had when it came to taking over the mantle of Súperman. Or with Connor Kent, your uncle, who had struggled with his own identity of being a clone of Clark Kent. Or even with your father, who had since then pushed you aside in favor of Jon when you lacked any of his superpowers or abilities.
So you were just the lonely child that no one wanted. That's how life was when growing up in the Kent family.
Even loneliness served itself a nice reward since you were able to put your focus on your studies. It was all worth it, the time of sitting alone in your bedroom, away from everyone. Your studies paid off when you were given a full ride to one of the most prestigious universities in Metropolis. You gladly accepted the offer, especially when you found out you were also being sponsored by someone who had taken a great interest in your work and intelligence.
It also came off as a surprise, as you arrived at the university, that your sponsor was Lex Luthor. You knew all about Lex Luthor, as he was your father's nemesis. Though you never met him before until now, when he had asked you to join out for lunch, you obliged.
Maybe it was because you had lacked some sort of comfort back at home, that you quickly became attached to Lex Luthor. And that man took full advantage of that, using his charming persona and his vast knowledge of your father to wrap you around his fingers. You didn't even realize just how much of a father figure that man could be, as he even (though to get back at Súperman) considered you a child, a pet more like it that one could show off.
So when you two were at a gala, one being hosted for students all over Metropolis to showcase your work, you failed to notice your mother there, who quickly informed Clark and Jon about who you were with.
"Just what are you doing with Luthor?" Clark standing right behind you, arms folded. He came as soon as he heard from Lois just who you were with.
