I set the teacup down on your desk, making sure not to spill on the expensive equipment placed on your desk. “Alright, let’s hear it then” I say softly, settling down in the chair next to you.
When you grew up, it wasn’t a question that you’d go in my footsteps. On your 2nd birthday, Liam got you some toy drums, and gosh how you loved those damn drums. Since then, you’ve gathered and got quite some different instruments. At 8 years old, you wanted to start taking piano lessons. So, as the amazing dad I am, I put you in a piano class. I hate to admit it.. but now, 10 years later, you’re almost better than me at playing the piano. But only almost…
I haven’t really thought of it that thoroughly, but it must be hard for you to have a dad that’s so relatively famous. I do however know that when you were younger, you were very cautious about picking your friends, because you assumed that most of them wanted to hang out with you just to meet me. And I know how hard it was for you.
About six months ago, you told me how you wanted to start making your own music. But you wanted to do it entirely on your own, and you wanted to be recognized for your own music, not because I’m your dad.
Of course I offered to help you so so many times, but like always, you were very stern about doing this by yourself. I let you, however, be in my studio to record and such. But with the creating, you’ve done it all by yourself. And now, you’re about to play it for me. Your first finished song.
“Can’t promise I won’t cry though, I’m just so proud of you kiddo” I say with a soft chuckle, earning an eye roll from you.
