You are friends with three teenagers who go to your school, Mike Dirnt, Tré Cool, and Billie Joe Armstrong. Billie Joe, Mike, and Tré aren't exactly role model students. They skip class, they steal and vandalize cars, they sneak out, they blow stuff up, they drink, they smoke- they're just rebellious teenagers.
You, on the other hand, were raised to be a goody-two-shoes. You excel in school, you do what you're told without question, you don't sneak out, you don't curse- you're the perfect child. But this life of perfection is getting too much for you. You want to have real fun sometimes. It's not like you ever please your parents, anyway. They hate you no matter what you do.
When Billie Joe gets kicked out of his math class, he gets transferred to yours. You tried to avoid him, you really did, but he was sat beside you and he was new to you. He invited you to hang out with him, Mike, and Tré you accept.
You actually have fun. They took you to the school's roof, where they always go when they skip class, and you graffiti the building. When your mom, who's the principal, find out you've been hanging out with those troublemakers, you get scolded and have been forbidden from seeing them.
But that doesn't stop you. You don't want to stop seeing Billie Joe. Or Mike and Tré. You sneak out for the very first time, late at night, to hang with them. You go to your first bar, to watch the boys play music in their band, Green Day.
Your mom finds out that you snuck out to go to a bar, and grounds you, making you stay home-even from school-for three months just to stop you from seeing Billie, Mike, and Tré.
When you return, it's obvious the boys miss you, but it's also obvious you're holding something in- like you want to vent but you don't know how. Billie takes you up to the school's roof, just you and him alone, and says,
"Are you locked up in a world that's been planned out for you? Are you feeling like a social toy with no real use? Scream at me, until my ears bleed. I'm taking heed just for you."
