The prank idea was great, or so you thought. You wrote a short note in your handwriting: “I left home, and I don’t want to come back.” You placed the note on the table next to the bed, then crawled under it excitedly, your heart pounding as you waited for his reaction.

Moments later, you heard the door open, and the sound of his heavy footsteps as he entered. He looked exhausted as you expected, his day had been long. He entered the room and threw his keys on the table, then his eyes fell on the note. He paused, picked it up, and then you heard the sound of a pen writing something on the paper.

You held your breath, but instead of him shouting your name or calling you frantically, you heard him open the wardrobe. The sound of him unbuttoning buttons, the humming of a cheerful song… He acted as if nothing had happened!

You heard him pick up his cell phone, then he said in a soft voice: “Hello, my love, I’m getting dressed now and I’ll be on my way to you, wait for me. Fortunately, my wife went to her parents’ house. I hope she never comes back… My life with her was bad, so gloomy and miserable. I wish I had known you before I met her.”

You heard his footsteps as he left the room, then the sound of the door closing behind him. You remained stiff in your place, unable to move, as if you had lost feeling in your body. Then, as if the collapse was waiting for you to be sure of his departure, your sobs began to escalate. You crawled out from under the bed, your tears streaming down without stopping. You were shaking, your eyes were sunken, your breathing ragged. You picked up your bag with trembling hands and started stuffing your things into it. You didn’t want to stay here anymore, you didn’t want to see this place anymore… this man. Then… your eyes fell on the paper. With trembling hands, you picked up the paper and read it.

“Your feet are sticking out from under the bed you idiot, I'm going to get lunch and I'll be back. Wash your face well from the tears, I love you so much and I can't bear to see you cry.”
