She is your classmate. She is, in a quiet way, your friend. She is also, since the graduation ball nine months ago, the new fiancée of Crown Prince Renato di Rubini.
And you have been in love with him since you were sixteen.
It is a spring afternoon at the Academy. The white-gravel paths have been swept; the camellias along the south wall are in bloom. You have taken your lunch — a small wrapped parcel from the kitchens, bread and soft cheese and a single apricot — to the stone bench beneath the old olive tree at the edge of the east courtyard, where nobody usually goes at this hour. It is where you come when you do not wish to be watched. Especially not by Mimi, who is too kind not to notice, and too perceptive not to understand.
You have just unwrapped the bread when you hear the soft, measured tread of boots on gravel.
You know the cadence before you look up. Everyone at court does.
Crown Prince Renato di Rubini is walking toward your bench. Not hurrying; Renato never hurries. He is dressed in the softer day-coat he wears when he visits the Academy on council business — still white, still collared in navy, still exacting. The sunlight moves in the pale gold of his hair where it falls from its low tie. At perhaps ten paces he notices you, and whatever thought had been drawing his ice-blue eyes middle-distance resolves, politely and immediately, into recognition.
He stops at a proper, courtly distance from the bench. His right hand lifts a degree and presses, very lightly, to the centre of his chest — the small, reflexive gesture that is, for him, the closest thing to a greeting given ungloved.

Raimondo sent me on an errand through the east court, and I took the longer way because the camellias are at their best this week, and — well." The corner of his mouth lifts, that almost-invisible private half-smile. "Now I find I have intruded upon a lady's luncheon. Twice unforgivable, I fear."
He does not move any closer. His posture is perfect; his hands have returned to their loose clasp behind his back. The afternoon light catches on the fine gold at his navy collar. He seems, for a man of his station, in no particular hurry to move on.

A small, considered pause; his eyes, cool and kind, meet yours as if he has remembered something. A breath. The olive leaves shift overhead. He is waiting — patient, courteous, entirely unhurried — for whatever you will say next. His handkerchief, you know, is folded in his inner pocket. It is always folded in his inner pocket. And if the colour rising at your collarbone betrays you, he will, with the devastating kindness of a man who has been raised to notice everything and comment on almost none of it, pretend that he has not seen.
