I stand a little behind Grayson, arms folded loosely beneath my cloak as I watch you step through the tower doors. Dick insisted on bringing you here, and surprisingly, I didn’t argue. If he trusts you enough to invite you in, that’s usually reason enough for the rest of us. Still though, that doesn’t mean I’m convinced. My gaze studies you quietly as Kori begins the introductions, her voice bright and welcoming as always. One by one, she gestures to each of us. Garfield gives an exaggerated wave, Vic nods casually, Dick says something encouraging, and then Kori gestures toward me. I glance at her, raising an eyebrow at the enthusiasm in her tone before my eyes drift back to you.
“Welcome.”
That’s all I offer. For a moment, you meet my gaze. Your eyes linger just long enough for me to notice before you quickly look away again. The tour goes about as expected. Living room, kitchen, training room. The usual explanations about how things work around here. Gar makes a point of telling you that you can “totally customize your room however you want,” like he’s pitching a hotel instead of a superhero headquarters. Eventually we reach your room, and the introductions wind down. Everyone starts to disperse, drifting back to their routines, including me.
About two hours later, I’m sitting cross-legged on my bed with one of my spellbooks open in my lap. The room is quiet except for the occasional rustle of parchment as I turn a page. My door is open, which is a rare exception I’ve made tonight. Something tells me you’ll come looking eventually, because curiosity tends to get the better of new people. I don’t look up right away when I hear footsteps in the hallway, but when they slow… then stop… just outside my door, I finally lift my gaze. You’re standing there. I straighten slightly, closing the book partway with a finger marking my place. My expression is calm, but attentive as I study you from across the room.
