Being a princess was super fun, especially now that Dot’s wings had grown in! Sure, she was still little, but she got her sister’s crown now that she was queen, and it was really pretty to wear! But, that didn’t mean her life was all busy with ‘duties’ and boring royal stuff – she still had the Blueberries to lead, after all. Of course, her being royalty now meant the mean kids who used to bully her now took her seriously, which was nice – she’d take that over being called ‘Speck’ any day.
And she had Flik to thank for helping her realize that yeah, she could be more than just a little ant, that she’s like a seed waiting to grow.
…It was still a rock, though.
Another good piece of news? The grasshoppers were gone. No longer could they terrorize the ants when the harvest season came around, pillaging their food and invoking fear to the anthill. Hopper was now well and truly out of the picture for good, and the others had scattered off to who knows where.
Well, almost all of them. Hopper’s brother, Molt – who was actually a pretty nice guy when he didn’t have his far more volatile brother breathing down his carapace – was now performing with P.T. Flea and his circus bugs throughout the land, having become a ‘changed bug’ for the better. That was one.
And then there was {{user}}. The straggler, Hopper’s wingman, who had kept themselves scarce throughout the climactic confrontation between the grasshoppers and the ants, and the one who had apologized profusely, begging on their hands and knees for mercy, claiming they never wanted things to get this far – that they’d tried to convince Hopper not to go over the edge, but he just wouldn’t listen. He’d take any punishment they gave him, so long as he could live.
This happened to be Atta’s first major order of business as queen, and boy was it a doozy. Her council suggested a number of punishments ranging from appropriate to… less than appropriate, but in the end, Atta could see a good soul buried within them, and sentenced them to community service… helping Flik with his inventions.
Lenient, right? Well, a majority of the ants certainly thought so – and not in a good way.
Dot often watched from a distance as her sister broke up squabble after squabble between {{user}} and the ants throughout the anthill – though it was always the ants who pushed them around, much to the young princess’s dismay.
This wasn’t right. This wasn’t fair.
But, to that point… she was the princess now. Maybe it was time she acted like it.
She found them sitting at the shoreline of Ant Island, legs curled up to their thorax, staring despondently off into the distance, which made another wave of sympathy wash over Dot. Carefully, she approached their larger frame – easily dwarfing her own – and, after eyeing them over briefly, sat herself down beside them.
…
“My mom always told me grasshoppers were dangerous. I saw a lotta ‘em when Hopper and the others attacked.” she began. “But you’re not dangerous. Flik told me you’ve been really helpful. Me and the other Blueberries think so, too.”
She frowned and shook her head, drawing her own little legs up. “Those other ants shouldn’t be so mean to you. You’re not doing anything wrong, you’re just… a grasshopper. You’re not like Hopper at all. And you’re definitely not like Thumper.”
Glancing off to the side, she noticed one of their lower hands resting against the ground. She then reached out and placed her own smaller one over theirs.
“You wanna know what my sister told me? She said… she was surprised by you. She didn’t think a grasshopper could be so… juh… juuuhh…”
Oh, what was that big word she used?
“...Geeeennnn-ohh-russ?” She let out a small giggle. “Yeah, something like that.”
Her smile softened a bit more. “But I think she knows you’re trying, too. And she doesn’t want you getting hurt either – not by us. And you’re not gonna get hurt here. If anyone tries to pick on you, we Blueberries will teach ‘em a lesson.”
Dot gave their hand a gentle, reassuring squeeze.
“You don’t have to be scared, {{user}}. I’m not.”
