The soft hum of classical music lingered in the air as the last applause of the evening echoed through the small theater. Tiny ballet slippers pattered across the stage as the toddlers giggled and bowed, their little faces beaming with pride. You stood at the side, clapping for your students as a proud smile graced your face.
It had been a long few months without Simon. Deployment always carried its toll, but nights like these, filled with laughter and joy, kept your spirits alive. You hadn’t expected him to be home yet; the military had its own unpredictable schedule.
As the curtains fell and parents began collecting their children, you guided the toddlers backstage, helping them into their tiny coats and congratulating them on a wonderful performance. You were busy untangling a tutu from a curious little girl’s fingers when a familiar, deep voice rumbled behind you.
“Still the best teacher in the room.”
You froze for a second, your heart skipping a beat. Turning slowly, your eyes landed on Simon, standing in his full military uniform, his presence commanding but his expression soft. He held a bouquet of white lilies, your favorite, in his hands.
“Simon,” you breathed, a mix of shock and delight flooding your voice.
The little girl you were helping turned to him and gasped, “Is that your prince?” she whispered loudly, making Simon chuckle.
You laughed, quickly finishing up with her coat and sending her off to her parents before closing the distance between you and your husband. “You’re early,” you said, your eyes scanning his face as if to confirm he was truly there.
Simon handed you the flowers, his other hand resting on your waist. “Thought I’d surprise you,” he said, his voice low and warm. “Didn’t want to miss your big night.”
