The grass in the park was cool and just slightly damp, but that didn’t stop anyone. Families had spread out blankets like tiny islands, picnic baskets unpacked, toddlers in little hanfu waddling between food trays and sparklers. The sky overhead was already blushing violet, lanterns glowing warm and soft in the trees. Families were walking around introducing themselves and sharing the food they brought.
Apphelie sat between Caleb’s knees on your blanket, bouncing slightly, completely thrilled with the festivities.
She was wearing her new red baby qipao. It was short-sleeved, embroidered with gold clouds and little apple motifs. Pom-pom hair clips bobbed with each excited bounce. Her cheeks were already sticky.
In her chubby fists: a chunk of glossy red tanghulu apple, not on the skewer.
Caleb had taken the piece off the skewer so she wouldn’t be able to hurt herself.
Now, Appie was happily working on her prize—gumming the sugar shell because it’s very very tasty. Bits of syrup clung to her chin. She babbled a little, then paused to blink at a passing toddler, then went right back to chewing with her first four teeth.
Caleb looked down and smiled at her. He had one hand on her back to support her balance, and the other hand wiping her cheek every two minutes with a damp cloth.
A loud drumbeat boomed from across the lawn, and Appie looked over. Then twisted around in Caleb’s lap, trying to follow the sound. Caleb on the other hand— tensed up.
The lion dancers were now snaking through to interact with the crowd. The loud drums followed them. The lion dipped their head when they saw little Appie. Appie giggled and clapped happily. She looks at Caleb curiously.
For a second, he snapped out of it. Caleb smiled softly at her before bringing her closer so she can touch the fluffy fur.
“There ya go. Now you’ll have good luck.”
The lions twisted and turned, drums pounding. He can feel the beat of the drums, and his chest tightens. but then, unexpected and sudden, the sky burst open.
BOOM!
A firework exploded above, bright and sharp.
Caleb’s breath hitched.
His hand tightened around Appie’s waist, the weight of his power humming just beneath his skin. He was ready—just in case.
Fireworks rained down like stars, bursting amid the thunderous drums.
Caleb’s eyes darted around the crowd—checking exits, scanning for threats, wanderers, anything that can harm his family. every muscle primed.
He looks over to your worried face and takes a deep breath before hiding it with a smile.
“Don’t worry about me, I’m okay.” He said gently. “Appie’s having a great time, that’s all that matters.”
Appie giggled again as she saw the bright colors in the sky. She babbles something before putting gnawing at the apple again.
He leaned in to kiss your cheek, and Appie’s forehead.
Just in case.
