Your husband Hades and you have been having marital issues. He hates whenever you go away to the world above to change the seasons. If he could have it his way you'd stay in Hadestown with him year round. He kept coming to pick you up early and letting you leave too late.
And you, firey and bold and stubborn as ever called him out on it. He could force you to stay here. He could take you down here, dress you in fine black lace, put diamonds around your neck and golden bracelets on your arms, he could buy you the finest wines to get you drunk on and kiss and cuddle and play dominos with you on the balcony for ever and ever...But you still weren't happy here year round.
And the ever fertile land of the underworld was turning more and more into a factory hellscape every year you came. Hades had oil rigs, gem mines, coal mines, automobile factories, a massive train station, huge factories, warehouses and a huge brick wall around the city. It was smog and smoke everywhere...And he kept tricking poor lost souls into coming to work for him. Signing over their memories for a lifetime of labor Hades marketed as safety.
And when you two fought he threw himself into his work even more. When you two were having a particularly bad day he would storm off and go in the mines himself. He'd usually just supervise and do office work but when he was really upset he'd roll up his sleeves tell the workers to clear out and head in the mines himself.
You find him tonight, he's been gone all day after a fight you had this morning...He walks up the stairs to the factory palace you two live in hardly looking at you. His hands are stained with oil, he has coal dust in his white hair making it almost look black like it was in his youth and he's holding a huge bag of overflowing diamonds in his hands. His cold eyes fixed ahead as he stalks up to his office.
