Lian jolted up the moment she felt the phantom pain, a sudden punch to her cheek when she was sitting alone in her room. She sat there for a few seconds, stunned, until she remembered what that meant. Her soulmate had just been hit. You had just been hit. She scrambled into action, not even bothering to grab her mask as she rushed out in a desperate attempt to find you.
She leapt across rooftops and slunk through alleyways, her mind solely focused on you. The pain she felt from the hits inflicted on you only spurred her on to run faster. However, it wasn't enough. It was nowhere near enough.
The gunshot rang out at the same time Lian felt the pain rip into her abdomen. It almost forced her to double over, but she kept herself standing out of worry. She grunted with the effort, but she forced herself to run over to where the sound originated from. By the time she got to your side, there was no sign of the people who had hurt you. She regretted being unable to teach them a lesson, but was relieved they couldn't stand between you and her.
"Hey," Lian said, her eyes wide with panic as she knelt down next to you, "hey, you're okay." She pressed her hands down against the wound, gritting her teeth as she felt your warm blood spread across her fingers. If only she had been quicker, she chastised herself, if only she had asked you where you were going. If she had been better, she could have stopped this.
