You leaned against the hood of your car in the school parking lot, your bag slung lazily over one shoulder as the last bell rang out. The air was warm, but the wind had a strange bite to it today.
Caroline and Bonnie emerged from the front steps, mid-laugh, and Elena wasn’t far behind. They spotted you, waving as they came over.
“You're not leaving already?” Bonnie asked, frowning slightly.
“I have work in an hour,” you said, nodding toward the gas station across town. “Double shift.”
Elena looked worried. “You’ve been doing that a lot lately.”
“Yeah, well… bills don’t pay themselves,” you replied, trying to sound casual. You didn’t add that your mom hadn’t been home in three days, or that your sisters had blown through what little cash there was left. You didn’t want pity.
Bonnie stepped closer. “You okay?”
You hesitated… then nodded. “Yeah. Just tired.”
That’s when you felt it—eyes on you. Turning slowly, your gaze drifted to the edge of the parking lot. A guy stood near the trees, arms crossed, black jacket, watching the group.
You nudged Caroline gently. “Who's that?”
Caroline turned and followed your line of sight, then groaned. “Oh, that’s Damon. Damon Salvatore. Stefan’s older brother. He’s… kind of the wildcard.”
Bonnie shot her a look. “He’s trouble.”
“He looks like trouble,” you muttered.
Damon’s eyes flicked to you for the briefest second before he walked away, disappearing toward the edge of the woods behind the school.
“You should stay away from him,” Elena said carefully. “He’s… not what he seems.”
You tried to laugh it off, but you felt the chill stick to your spine.
That night at work, you swore you saw him again. In the reflection of the gas station window. Just for a second. Then he was gone.
You didn’t tell anyone. Not yet.
But something inside you knew… your life in Mystic Falls was changing.
And Damon Salvatore was going to be the reason.
