It was supposed to be a simple cover story. Pose as a married couple to gain access to an exclusive gala, charm the right people, retrieve classified documents, and disappear. No complications. No loose ends.
But somewhere along the way, something went terribly, terribly wrong.
Because when you and Atsushi wake up in a foreign country, groggy from the night before, there’s a marriage certificate on the nightstand. With both of your names on it. Signed. Stamped. Legally binding.
Atsushi stares at it, eyes widening in sheer horror.
“T-this has to be a mistake!” he sputters, voice cracking. “We-we would’ve remembered something like this, right?!”
You groan, rubbing your temples as flashes of the previous night come back. The gala. The strict guest vetting. The offhand comment from the event host: ‘Only legally married couples may enter.’ A rush job with the paperwork. A joke that clearly went too far. Oh.
You didn’t just pretend to be married for the mission. You actually got married.
Atsushi looks at you like he’s about to pass out. “What do we do? Do we… annul it? Can we even do that? What if-what if they already sent the paperwork back to Japan?!”
