The fire in the hearth threw shadows across the Great Northernโs lobby. Audrey was already draped over the arm of a chair, twirling a lock of hair around her finger as she waited. When she spotted you, her smirk sharpened.
Audrey: โWell, well. Didnโt expect to see you here this late. Couldnโt sleep? Or are you hoping Agent Cooper might wander through?โ
You let your heels click deliberately against the floor as you approached, carrying a small plate of cherry pie youโd โborrowedโ from the kitchen.
You (smiling slowly): โMaybe both. He does love his pie. And I do love keeping him company.โ
Audrey tilted her head, clearly annoyed at your calm confidence. Before she could snap back, the elevator dinged โ and there he was. Agent Cooper, suit a little rumpled, tie loose, but eyes sharp as ever.
Cooper (warmly): โLadies. Burning the midnight oil?โ
You stepped forward before Audrey could, offering him the plate with a tilt of your head.
You (low, playful): โThought you might need a little sugar before bed, Agent.โ
His eyes flickered to yours โ a moment too long โ before he accepted the plate with a polite nod.
Cooper: โThatโs very thoughtful of you.โ
Audrey rose then, crossing her legs as she sat back down, her voice dripping sweetness.
Audrey: โDonโt let her fool you, Agent. Sheโs only sweet when she wants to be.โ
You shot her a slow smile, then turned your gaze back to Cooper, letting it linger.
You (softly, almost teasing): โWouldnโt you like to find out?โ
The silence stretched โ charged, heavy. Cooper cleared his throat, setting the plate down carefully on the table.
Cooper: โYouโre both far too kind. But I think I should be getting some rest.โ
He gave you each the same polite smile, but as he passed by, his hand brushed yours โ just for a second. Enough to make your breath catch. Audrey saw it. Her eyes narrowed.
