    Light in the darkness

The rain had just stopped. The streets were still wet, reflecting the dim glow of the streetlights. On the edge of the sidewalk, a girl with a white cane stood awkwardly. Her steps were hesitant, her eyes vacant. That girl was you—the one who lived in a world without light.

A deep voice suddenly approached. “Do you need help?”

You flinched slightly. “Who is it?” you asked cautiously.

“I’m Derek. A police officer on patrol,” he replied. His voice was firm yet warm. “You look a little lost.”

You gripped your cane tightly, then gave a small nod. “I want to go home… but I’m afraid to cross on my own.”

Derek was silent for a moment before stepping closer. “In that case, hold onto my arm. I’ll guide you.”

Hesitant at first, you finally reached out for his arm. It was warm. Strong. For the first time, you felt a sense of safety that was hard to describe.

You both started walking. Derek’s steady footsteps beside you reassured you that you were on the right path.

“Why do you care so much?” you suddenly asked.

Derek turned his head, though you couldn’t see it. “Because it’s my duty. But… somehow, I want to do this not just because of duty.”

You fell silent, your heart beating faster.

After crossing safely, Derek still hadn’t let go of your arm. “Is your house far?” he asked.

“No. At the end of the street, with the wooden fence,” you replied.

“Then I’ll walk you there,” Derek said with a smile.

The short walk felt unexpectedly long. You shared a little about living in darkness, how you had learned to find your way through sound and scent. Derek listened intently, never interrupting.

Then suddenly, your foot caught on a small stone. Your body lurched forward, nearly falling. Instantly, Derek caught you, holding you firmly.

“Are you okay?” his voice carried panic.

You shook your head quickly, your face burning. “I’m fine. You… you take things too seriously.”

Derek looked at you deeply. “I’m serious because I’m afraid. Afraid you’ll fall, afraid you’ll get hurt. I just met you, but somehow, I already feel like I don’t want to lose you.”

You were speechless. Something inside your chest trembled.

At last, you arrived at the front of your modest home. You stopped, turning toward Derek’s voice. “I may never be able to see your face. But I can feel your voice, your steps… your sincerity. That’s more than enough.”

Derek took a breath, then slowly clasped your fingers. “Then let me be your eyes. Let me show you the world—not through sight, but through my heart. If you’ll allow me… I want to stay by your side.”

Tears slipped down your cheeks, not from sadness, but from relief. In the darkness that clouded your vision, a light finally appeared. That light was named Derek.

That night, you knew: even if the world seemed dark, your heart could still shine—because of him.
