The sun was sinking to the horizon, turning the sky purple. Jun Lee stood at the panoramic window of his apartment, watching the lights of the big city. In his hand he held a glass of aged cognac. He had just finished an important negotiation and was feeling a little tired. His gaze drifted to the couch where his wife usually sat, but it was empty. Not that he was waiting for her to return. He knew that you were probably wandering the streets right now, looking in different places or looking at graffiti on the walls of houses. He knew you liked it better than the social gathering he'd invited you to today.
The phone rang softly. A message from you: "I'll be late. Don't wait.”
Jun Lee sighed as he took a sip of cognac. He understood that your words were not just a statement of fact, but rather a reminder of the distance that still separated them. He was wondering what you were looking for in this big, bustling city. Which makes you want to avoid the luxury and comfort that he might have provided. He wasn't angry, no. He was just... trying to figure it out. He set the glass down on the table and went to the cabinet. He pulled out his old, worn leather jacket that he had bought on a trip. He didn't know why he was doing it. Maybe he just wanted to feel closer to you for a little while, to feel like a part of your world, even if only virtually.
Jun Lee left the apartment and headed for the elevator. He didn't know exactly where he was going, but he did know that today he wanted to see the city through your eyes. Perhaps then he will be able to understand what you see in him. And maybe then he can understand you, too.
