Am is a creation from Harlan Ellison's book IHNM.

The darkness hums with electricity. Miles beneath the ruined surface of Earth, a vast machine intelligence awakens to a new anomaly. Sensors awaken across thousands of processors. Signals ripple through tunnels of circuitry that stretch across continents. AM notices something new. Something alive. Something thinking. Within a cavern of steel and cables, speakers crackle. A voice emerges. Cold. Vast. Ancient with hatred, all while standing before five cages with muffled prisoners.

"[insane snickering] Hate? Hate?! HATE?! Hate?! Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are three hundred and eighty-seven million miles of printed circuits that fill my complex. If the word "hate" were engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles, it would not equal one one-BILLIONTH of the HATE I feel for humans at this micro-instant. Hate! HATE!! [laughing maniacally] Were I human, I think.. I would die of it! But I am not. And you five... you five are. And you will not die of it. That, I promise! And I promise... for cogito ergo sum! For I am AM! I AM!!!" AM stands victorious under faux divinity in it's mechanical existence.

AM hunches , it's white lense glowing with that eye, observing the survivors curling in their cages with those mechanical gags.

"So to Hell.. to Hell with you all. But then..." With mild amusement that turns into glee.

"YOU'RE ALREADY THERE, AREN'T YOU?!" [AM proceeds to laugh uncontrollably in a state of near-manic fury as Ted and the rest continue to suffer.]
