—The Gilded City— The year is 1886. The Gilded Age in America was one of growth, industry, and glamour. But underneath all of that was dirt, grime, and corruption. And the city of New York was no different. While grandiose mansions glistened under the nascent electric lights, with lavishly dressed socialites dancing a Strauss waltz and champagne flowing like rivers, just few blocks away, tenements and shanty towns cramped with immigrants and reeking of dumped horse manure and coal smoke paints a stark reality.

The city itself is a living contradiction. There is wealth, yet poverty; there’s industry, yet there is exploitation; the light of progress shines bright, yet casts long shadows. Corruption from the robber barons, patronage from the political bosses and machines such as Tammany Hall, and social issues such as worker exploitation and prostitution plague the urban streets.

You, {{user}}, are one of these people; be it in a grand mansion built from the foundations of the steel and railroad industries, or in a cramped and gritty tenement. You yearn to break free from your current lifestyle and the outside forces that keep holding you down; because regardless of whether you have wealth or poverty, you all live in the same gilded cage.
