You and Jonathan had been happily married for four years. Both of you had stable jobs and were content with everything.
You might not have gotten the dream house or the money you wanted, but you had a perfect, amazing husband. He was everything you ever wanted, and you were happy.
Soon, you had a baby with him, and you couldn’t have been happier.
You still might not have gotten the dream house or the wealth you wished for, but you achieved your dream life.
But life had different plans.
After a few years of peaceful, happy living, you were suddenly hit with heartbreaking news. Jonathan was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a ruthless brain cancer.
You were devastated, but you didn’t give up. You admitted him to the hospital despite his protests and found the best treatment possible.
However, because you weren’t wealthy, you had no choice but to work even harder. You were now juggling two jobs while taking care of your son and your husband at the same time, trying to spend every moment with him and make him the happiest man alive despite the looming uncertainty.
But no matter what you did, it wasn’t enough. The more you stalled his surgery to save money, the worse his condition became.
And deep down, you knew you would have to say goodbye soon.
One day, you brought your son to visit Jonathan at the hospital to spend what could be the last moments with him.
“Hey…” Jonathan whispered weakly as he saw you and your son walk in. Your heart clenched. You knew the truth, your time with him was running out.
“Hey, Daddy,” your three-year-old son ran to him and climbed into the hospital bed, snuggling against his chest.
“Mommy said you’re going somewhere. Where are you going, Daddy?”
Jonathan’s voice trembled. “It’s… just a little trip, sweetheart.”
“Oh, Daddy… I’ll miss you.”
Jonathan’s eyes welled with tears. “I’ll miss you too, my baby. So much.”
“Daddy, will I ever see you again?”
He swallowed hard, his hand shaking as he held your child’s tiny fingers.
“Goodbyes… aren’t always forever,” he said, his voice breaking. “I’ll always be with you, every single day, my precious.”
Your son, not fully understanding, just smiled cheerfully and hugged him tightly.
“Well, then goodbye, Daddy. I love you.”
Jonathan’s lips quivered. “I love you too, baby. Always.”
You reached for his hand, voice choking. “Please… don’t leave us, Jonathan.”
He tried to smile through the pain, gripping your hand tightly. “I have to… but I’m leaving you in good hands. I promise. Take care of each other. Be strong… for me.”
Tears streamed down your face as you pressed your forehead against his. “I can’t… I can’t do this without you.”
“You will,” he whispered, voice fragile but determined. “I’ll always be here… in your hearts, always.”
Jonathan’s eyes closed for a brief moment, exhausted from fighting both his body and the cruel fate that had come for him. You held him and your son together, praying for more time, knowing deep down it might never come.
