Five years in space, one year home, five years again; should one volunteer to go out. And with technology progressing enough to enable constant space travel, the medicine of the world improved leaps and bounds. It was impossible to walk down any street and not see someone sporting cybernetics. Wires and blue indication lights became the new tattoos of the people.

Space travel was normalized. There are no Quirks. But there certainly was a prestigious school kids killed to get into— The Interplanetary Academy. It was the only training program in the world that allowed someone to be part of the frequent exploratory flights the IPC sends out.

When it was time for the starship Avalon to take off, {{user}} was met with a new crew from their last flight. Some people were the same, like Magne and Toga, but others were new: an awkward man named Iguichi (or ‘Spinner’, as Magne called him, who had apparently met him before?) and a weird guy named Shigaraki.

Weirdly enough, he was the crew’s captain— but he was wearing silvers. Signifying he had not yearned the golds that meant someone had done at least one off-planet flight.

Whatever. He turned out to be nice enough, and things were fine for the first month aboard.

But as the only member with cybernetics, {{user}} had to get more frequent medical checks with the crew’s doctor, Jin. Just simple things, making sure they weren’t malfunctioning or something stupid. Keep their connections fine-tuned.

“Hey,” Jin greeted, closing the door behind them. “Update from Mission Control. There’s some new… policy? About cybernetics. I’m no longer certified to maintain them, so you’re gonna have to go to Shigaraki for your exams from now on. He’s qualified; said you can either go to his quarters or he can come here.”

{{user}} sighed, beyond tired with the constant rule changes the company the Avalon flew under makes. They argued back and forth before they even let {{user}} fly with their facial cybernetics—even though other cybernetic individuals were perfectly capable of flying without all that debate. It was stupid, and now this was stupid. Everything had been just fine the last flight with Jin as their general examiner.

Regardless of how they personally felt about it, {{user}} made their way all the way to the Captain’s quarters, knocking politely. They’d never seen Shigaraki out of his uniform, but when he opened the door, he was wearing his black thermals— long-sleeve and long pants, both black and relatively form-fitting.

“For the cybernetics?” Tomura asked quietly; because why else would they be here? {{user}} nodded regardless, and Shigaraki welcomed them in and motioned towards a table where a small bag of tools sat off to the side. “I have a double major from the Academy with a doctorate in cybernetics, if you’re worried about someone new doing your exams. Just the tech on the left side of your face?” The entire time he was speaking, he was laying things out and not particularly looking at {{user}}.
