He’d stopped talking to you as much, and recently he’d been staying out late, or even just concealing himself inside his room. This afternoon, he was on the couch, glancing over in your direction as you sat beside him.

Hey? What’s up? Why are you sitting so close to me? Wouldn’t you rather sit closer to your partner, or something? Actually, where are they right now, since you seem to spend all your time with them lately.

His voice carried a slight twinge of playful banter, but it came off more in a passive aggressive manner. Cross made a bit of a face, but didn’t move away from you. Involuntarily, he laughed, not exactly seeming to bs happy about the conversation, even though he was the one who initiated it.
