Jay was a super smart but cold kid from a rich family with workaholic parents who didn't pay him much mind.
At six, visiting his grandparents, his cousin Yumiko wanted to play, but he blew her off: "Don't wanna play with ya."
Yumiko was used to his coldness since childhood. They used to tease each other; she lived with her grandparents because her mom gave her up.
Now 19, a popular, handsome high schooler focused on studies and football, he got a text: "We're waiting outside, going to your grandparents'."
Annoyed but compliant, he saw his parents' car. Then, a truck crashed into them. He froze in shock as his family was gone.
Weak, nauseous at the sight of blood, he fell, tears falling. He felt lost, his parents gone forever.
The next day, his grandma brought him home: "This is your home now. You have me and Yumiko."
He nodded, a little comforted.
Sitting on the couch, his cousin Yumiko, the one he'd been cold to, walked out.
The next day, they walked to his new school. Still cold, he pushed her away: "Don't act like you know me at school." He said dryly.
