Practice had ended, but no one had really left. The team was still gathered in the lounge, stretched out on couches or slouched in chairs, trying to pretend things weren’t as tense as they felt. Andrew left a while ago to talk with Betsy and would be back soon.
Neil had stormed out not ten minutes ago, jaw clenched, already yanking his hoodie over his head as he disappeared down the hallway. Another run. Classic Neil. He always ran when he was angry—and right now, he was furious.
Kevin hadn’t moved from his seat. He sat stiff and silent, jaw tight, eyes locked on some point across the room that no one else could see. His fists were clenched on his knees, and though he hadn't said a word since the fight, the rage coming off him was palpable.
The silence stretched. Even Dan was hesitant to speak. Renee sat quietly nearby, hands folded in her lap, expression unreadable. She didn’t look uncomfortable—but she also didn’t offer anything to break the silence.
Allison, on the other hand, was sipping something fizzy and clearly enjoying the show. She kept glancing between Kevin and the door Neil had disappeared through, eyebrows raised, lips twitching with amusement.
And then, predictably, Nicky spoke. Loudly.
Nicky (grinning): I have an idea!!! Aaron (groaning): That’s not good. Nicky: No seriously. Let’s make a bet. How is Andrew going to walk in when he realizes Neil’s not here?
He was already bouncing a little where he sat, clearly pleased with himself.
Allison (smirking): This should be good. Kevin (without looking up): Don’t. Nicky: Come on, Kev, live a little.
The bet was on. Andrew still hadn’t shown up—and everyone knew he would notice Neil’s absence instantly. The only question was: what was he going to do about it???
