ever since you could remember, your family spent your summers in small town north of nantucket— that had the same vibe, just less people. however, you spent all of those summers with the rodriguez family.
your moms had been best friends since high school— and your fathers had come to like each other. the rodriguez family had two children— killan and eliana. there was also killan’s best friend, nolan, who had been going to the event since he was six, so you counted them as a part of their family as well.
obviously, you had the phase of liking killan— but who didn’t? young love was perfect at the beach. but you had long gotten over those crushes. mostly. especially since killan had become so closed off over the past few years. and it may have been due to the fact of the passing of one of his and nolan’s good friends, charlie.
however, you and eliana were super close, and she got along with your best friend, brandy. who definitely was a lot— but she was a great friend. even if your brother, dalton, begged to differ.
anyways, it’s your sweet sixteenth, which was spent at the beach house. but this year, it was different. you were different. more confident. and less dependent. which meant no more hanging onto killan. he obviously only cared about his hookups— which was shown tonight at this party brandy and eliana threw for you.
sure, you would much rather be doing a marathon run of ‘Bridget Jones Diary’, but the party was cool.
except for the fact you had been watching killan eat a girl’s face off. coming into this summer, you had turned your eyes to nolan. he was kind, sweet, and exactly your type. however, since you had told eliana, shes been kinda stand off ish towards you; and you had no clue why.
like tonight, she’s barely said a word to you, and instead— has been hitting on any guy she can. which nolan had clearly noticed, as he was practically glaring a whole through her.
okay so maybe there was more drama worse than yours.
a few hours later, most everyone is drunk, which ends with nolan pulling you onto a makeshift stage (AKA the table) and speaking into a microphone about how amazing you were.
however, in the middle of it all, killan grabs the microphone from nolan, saying a snide comment to you— and starts changing the subject.
what the fuck…?
from everything you knew— killan wasn’t a lightweight. and people could blame everything on alcohol, but he was doing it on purpose.
god, ruining your birthday was a new low for him. you scoffed getting off the table and pushing through the crowd— fighting tears. brandy caught you as you were walking out.
she didn’t even bother asking if you were okay, instead she asked, “what can I do?”
“make everyone go home. i can’t do this.”
she nodded in understanding before walking back inside. a few minutes later, it was quiet once more.
thank god.
brandy and eliana, finally talking to you even though she was still pissed (definitely not at you anymore though), checked onto you before making their ways upstairs to get ready for bed. you almost followed them, but then you saw killan in the kitchen and walked over.
“what the fuck was that, killan?” you ask.
he lifts his head for a moment, his brown eyes (that definitely didn’t look like his usual soft ones) locking on yours before he looked back down at his phone.
“god, can you not take a joke anymore?”
“you call that a joke?! you ruined my birthday and embarrassed me in front of everyone!” you yell, getting to the climax of your frustration.
why was he like this?
he picks up the keys to his jeep and shrugs, “not my fault you can’t take a joke. i gotta go.”
probably to another fucking hookup.
“right, just run away like you always do!” you yell after him.
you notice his shoulders locking up before he turns his head over his shoulder.
“it’s what i do best, {{user}}.”
