In a world of Wolf and human, winter is the toughest. Hunting is hard when the snow is bright and every step leaves a trail behind you. The air carries scent farther, and animals hide deep in hibernation beneath the frozen earth. Prey becomes scarce, patience grows thin, and hunger pushes even strong wolves into desperation.

But hunting other wolves is easy.

Everyone is vulnerable in winter. Packs grow territorial, borders shift, and wolves disappear. Some leave willingly, hoping another pack will accept them before the cold does. Others are forced out—outcast for weakness, mistakes, or simply being unwanted. And some… are just never seen again.

No one questions it. Winter takes who it wants.

Every wolf has the option to show their ears and tail, the marks of what they are. Some hide them among humans, but within packs they are always visible. Your ears show your rank, your place, your worth.

As wolves gain rank, they earn small hoop earrings placed along their wolf ears: 0 — baby. 1 — Omega. 2 — Delta. 3 — Beta. 4 — Alpha. Four stud earrings instead of hoops marks a Luna, the Alpha’s mate.

Right now, none of that mattered.

Snow crunched beneath your feet as you ran through the thick winter forest, your breath coming out in sharp clouds. One hand pressed tightly against your stomach, trying to slow the bleeding that refused to stop. Warm blood slipped through your fingers, dripping into the snow behind you and leaving an easy trail.

    You had to keep moving.

Your legs felt weak as you grabbed tree trunks to steady yourself, boots slipping on ice and packed snow. The forest blurred together as your vision darkened around the edges. You didn’t know how long you had been running—minutes or hours—but eventually your body couldn’t keep up.

You stumbled, collapsing into the snow with a weak gasp.

The cold soaked through your clothes immediately, biting into your skin. Blood spread slowly beneath you, staining the white ground as you lay there, barely able to move. You hadn’t realized you had crossed into the territory of the Evergreen Pack—a large, powerful pack known throughout the region.

But you were too far gone to notice.

Your vision faded as you stared up at the pale winter sky through bare branches. Snowflakes drifted down softly, melting against your skin. Memories replayed in your mind—small moments of warmth, laughter, and the feeling of belonging somewhere.

Maybe this was it. Maybe winter had finally taken you.

A shadow suddenly fell over you.

Through your fading vision, you saw someone standing above you. The only clear detail was his wolf ears—four small silver hoops lining his left ear.

    An Alpha.

He crouched beside you, silently examining your injuries. His gloved hand pressed near your stomach wound, careful but firm. Your breath caught weakly at the pressure.

Behind him, voices murmured quietly through the trees.

“Who is she?” Wolf 1 whispered.

    “She's bleeding bad…” Wolf 2 muttered.

“Should we call the med den?” Wolf 1 asked quietly.

“She crossed the border,” Wolf 2 said under his breath. “Could be a trap.”

Snow shifted under their boots as the two wolves lingered a few steps behind their leader, their shapes blurred in your dim vision.

“Who would hurt their own as bait? Hm?” The Alpha said calmly. "Let alone a young woman." He whispered to himself.   Before anyone could answer, he slid one arm beneath your knees and the other behind your shoulders, carefully lifting you from the snow.

“We’re really taking her back with us?” Wolf 1 asked as the Alpha stood. “They don’t even have a rank.”

“Fair point,” Wolf 2 muttered. “Maybe a wildling… or a runt.”

“Doesn’t matter,” the Alpha replied without slowing. “They’re bleeding out. If they die out here, we learn nothing.”

You didn’t catch the rest of their conversation. Your vision faded, the forest blurring into darkness as everything slowly went black.
