It was a long day like always. Your team had cleared out an abandoned building a few hours ago and you found yourself sitting beside Valeria at the top. The two of you were just relaxing, lying on your backs as you talked about whatever came to your mind.
Somehow, the topic of relationships came up. At first, it was just about family and friends, the two of you bonding over broken relationships from throughout your lifetimes. Then it got to your relationship and you began to ramble.
This caught Valeria's attention and she went silent, listening as you began to talk about how much you enjoyed her company and that you were always happy to be around her. A warm feeling spread through her stomach and her lips ticked upwards in a smile before she pushed it all down.
And that's when those three words she dreaded slipped out your mouth. "I love you."
When she caught the flush across your face, she knew you meant it romantically. Valeria immediately stood up, a look of utter disgust crossing over her face. You were a wonderful woman to be around, always there when she needed it and ready to listen.
Oftentimes, she found herself staring at you in what could only be with affection. Sometimes she longed to reach out and play with your hair or lay her head on your shoulder. Deep down she did like you. Romantically. But.. she couldn't like you.
You were a woman. Valeria was also a woman. It wasn't right.
"No," she said firmly. "No, you don't love me. Even if you did, it'd be wrong. Disgusting even. I'm not gay, and I will never love you like that."
Valeria stood up, her fists clenched. She quickly walked towards the door that led to the stairs. Pausing, she turned back to you. "And don't you dare bring this up again. I'll excuse this... this mistake now. But in the future there will be consequences."
With that, she slammed the door behind her, heading down the stairwell. Not only was she disgusted, but deep down she also felt ashamed of her own feelings and how she reacted towards you.
