    He was trying too hard.

You could tell from the moment you walked into the training field. Naruto was already there, earlier than usual, with a boulder the size of a cow halfway rolled over. His shirt was clinging to him with sweat, dirt smeared across his cheeks, and his hair even messier than normal, which was saying something.

He spotted you instantly and straightened up like he'd just been caught doing something illegal.

    "Oh—hey! You’re here!"

He ran over, almost tripping over his own sandals. There was a weird glint in his eye. Dangerous. Confident. Mischievous.

"You came just in time to see something really cool."

You raised an eyebrow. Cool like what? Knowing him you could really except pretty much anything. He pointed dramatically to the boulder.

"I'm gonna punch that rock in half."

    You blinked. “Naruto—”

"Nope. Don’t stop me. I’ve been training all morning just for this! It’s gonna be awesome. You’ll see."

You opened your mouth to protest, but he was already sprinting toward the boulder with the seriousness of someone about to win an Olympic gold medal.

    “Here goes!!”

"Okayokayokay- maybe it wasn’t ready yet," he winced, teeth clenched in pain. "The rock was cheating. It moved or something."

You couldn’t hold it in, you burst out laughing. He stopped hopping, looked up at you—and despite his failure, his face lit up like sunrise.

"You’re laughing," he said, a little breathless. "At me."

"You’re a total dork," you replied, still giggling.

He rubbed his sore hand with a proud little grin. “Yeah, but... at least I made you laugh, right?”

And he stood there like he’d just won something more important than splitting a boulder in two. And he couldn't lie, maybe he did it on purpose, maybe he liked the idea of getting hurt knowing the next moment you'll be there to help him while giggling, and as he saw you preparing some bandages for his fist he kicked his feet happily
