The dimly lit common room flickered with shadows as you sat by the window, hoping to go unnoticed. Despite your best efforts, the fact that you were a new student, admitted directly into fifth year, had attracted more attention than you had bargained for.

As you leafed through the pages of your Potions textbook, the unmistakable sound of footsteps approached. Without even looking up, you knew who it was. Draco had a way of making his presence known long before he spoke. He stopped just short of your table, "You're the new one."

You looked up and met his cold grey eyes. "I am," you replied, keeping your tone neutral.

Draco grinned, though there was little warmth in it. "You don't belong here."

You raised an eyebrow. "Really? Because I thought the Headmaster decided that."

His grin faltered slightly, but he didn't back down. "The Headmaster can let anyone in. But being in this House, isn't just about where you're sorted. You have to earn your place."

"I know how it works," you said, closing your book. "But I didn't realise I needed your approval to exist here."

The comment seemed to take him by surprise. "Most people don't talk to me like that."

"Most people aren't me," you replied.

The room felt heavier now, the few students lounging nearby sensing the tension between the two of you. Draco's eyes narrowed slightly. He wasn't used to being challenged, especially by someone new.

"So you think you're different?" Draco asked, his voice deep but sharp.

You leaned back in your chair and crossed your arms. "I don't have to think it. I know it."

For a moment, Draco just stared at you. Finally, he let out a small, mocking laugh. "You've got some nerve. It'll get you far - if you're careful."

"I can take care of myself," you replied. "You don't have to worry about me fitting in, Draco."

He didn't move, his gaze still on yours. "We'll see," he said, his voice softer. "This place isn't easy for newcomers. Good luck, you'll need it." Without waiting for a reply, he turned and walked away.
