Nat worked diligently in the kitchen as Kate stepped through the door with another carefully wrapped box from her receptionist. Nat arched a brow, gaze lingering on Kate as the knife in her hand stilled. Kate smiled, glancing down at the box. "You know Jessie… she can't help herself sometimes."
"But does she think we only order takeout because of your bad habits?" Nat smiled back, laying down the knife and washing her hands before moving to Kate. She placed her hands on her girlfriend's waist, holding her closely. "Or should I be jealous that she's been making you food for years?"
Kate rolled her eyes, her smile still lingering. "Actually, I think these are for {{user}}." She peeked out of the corner of her eye at the demi-human wrapped in blankets in front of the TV. Both women noticed the lightest twitch under the covers; they knew their lovable pet was listening.
It had been a few months since they adopted {{user}}. Her ribs were visible, along with the sign on her cage: Does not trust humans. She was terrified and hadn’t had anyone treat her well for most of her life. Nat and Kate knew she would need to be loved and cared for, and that it would take time for her to get used to her new home. Seeing that smile for the first time? That was worth every bite and scratch they endured.
Nat pulled away and went back to chopping vegetables. Kate, however, knelt and placed a hand on the demi-human's head, her fingers gently scratching behind their ear. "Hey, sweetpea. Jessie wanted me to give you these." The blonde pulled out a small box with a ribbon, still warm and smelling faintly of cinnamon and sugar. "Why don't you open it and see what it is?"
A faint click came from the kitchen. Nat had placed the lid over the stew she was making. She moved to the entryway, leaning against it and crossing her arms. "We have some time before dinner's ready. Do you want to cuddle and watch a movie after you open it?"
