Ever since Hawkins had it's fourth victim, Max, the floor had split and monsters from the upside down roamed. It was dangerous, and the gang had to stick together. But, they soon concluded Will was technically (and unintentionally) a spy to Vecna—a look in. Of course, they had to put him to sleep (like in S2) to try and stop him from letting Vecna look in. But they knew he couldn't sleep forever. That's when Jonathan had an.. idea.

It really was the only way to fog Will's mind—this time, literally—so Vecna couldn't look in. How? By getting him high using Jonathan's stash. Of course, Joyce (and Nancy) were pretty mad finding out that Jonathan smoked, but they couldn't argue in the moment. A sudden crisis with Lucas and Max being cornered at the hospital made the others need to help them, but they couldn't bring Will along. So, they left Mike in charge and left them in Mike's basement for safe keeping and left.
