When Bilbo woke up, He was frightful. It was so dark that he couldn't tell if he had opened his eyes or not. Very slowly Bilbo had gotten up and began to walk on all fours until he got to the wall of the tunnel. He couldn't find anything on it, neither up nor down. No sign of goblins, or dwarves. He guessed that he should continue going, find a way out. It wasn't until he crawled along for a good way that he felt a cold sensation, a tiny ring of metal on the floor. It was a turning point in his career, but he had not yet known it.
