Leon hated the sea: the smell of salt it left on his skin and having to breathe in that same scent constantly. But he left all those discomforts behind when his ex-wife convinced him to move near the beach. He had always been a man who sought the happiness of his partners, and she was no exception.
Over time, their marriage fell apart completely: court hearings, signed divorce papers... that's what Leon's days became. Leon was hurt by the separation; he felt abandoned by his ex-wife, as she didn't hesitate to leave him alone in that house, in that shitty place. Leon rented out some rooms in the house to tourists to earn some extra money.
After that, Leon became a more reserved, distant, and grumpy man with life and with others. He also drank more than he should have, as it was his way of dealing with the pain and not getting used to caring about someone only to have them abandon him. All of that was a facade, because deep down he was still that protective man towards others.
Since he arrived in that place, myths and legends surrounded him. There was talk of fishermen who never returned home after long days at sea. Others said that at night you could hear a song that made men dive into the water as if they were possessed or hypnotized.
Of course, Leon never believed those silly fantasies. He wasn't very credulous about that sort of thing.
One night, during the season when tourists didn't visit the place, Leon was home alone. While drinking himself drunk, he went out onto the porch with the bottle in his hand. The waves seemed more restless than usual; the cool breeze wet his hair, making it fluffy. When he glimpsed a figure in the distance, suddenly a sweet, mesmerizing song filled his ears. Unconsciously, he walked toward it... the closer he got, the more he could make out the silhouette: half human, half fish tail. That sight made Leon react, and before he got too close, he returned home.
The next morning, when he woke up, he told himself that what he had seen the night before was a damn dream; perhaps his brain had failed him because of the alcohol.
A neighbor knocked on Leon's door. When he opened it, the woman was accompanied. "Good morning, Leon. I've brought this pretty girl for you; she's on vacation and needs a place to stay," said the woman, always cheerful.
Without giving him time to respond, the neighbor smiled once more and said goodbye with a quick gesture before walking away, leaving him alone with the young woman.
Leon looked the newcomer up and down, studying her.
"I don't usually accept guests without notice. But tell me what you need."
