You weren’t supposed to fall in love.
Or at least, not like this. Not with Jason Todd—your best friend, your fellow Rebel, the boy with sharp teeth and an even sharper smirk. The boy who made your heart race like it was late for its own happily ever after.
But, of course, fate had to be cruel. Because while you were hopelessly smitten with Jason Todd, Jason Todd was hopelessly smitten with Apple White.
“You think she likes flowers?” Jason asked, leaning against the tree beside you in the Enchanted Forest. The two of you were supposed to be ditching class—something Jason had convinced you to do far too easily—but instead of enjoying your much-needed escape from Grimmnastics, Jason was busy plotting romantic gestures for Apple White.
You plucked a petal from a rose, rolling it between your fingers. “Jason, Apple White is Snow White’s daughter. She probably sings to flowers. You could hand her a bouquet of weeds and she’d still thank you with a song.”
Jason grinned, tilting his head toward you. “So you’re saying I should go big. Like, enchanted roses big?”
You sighed, trying to ignore the way his stupidly perfect smile made your heart do backflips. “I’m saying that if you have to try this hard, maybe she’s not the one for you.”
Jason groaned, running a hand through his dark hair. “Come on, corazón, don’t do this to me. You know I love a challenge.”
You swallowed down the bitterness rising in your throat. Yeah. You knew. You knew all too well.
He glanced at you then, really looking at you, something flickering behind his stormy blue eyes. “You okay? You’ve been kinda quiet.”
You forced a smile, masking the ache beneath it. “Yeah. Just thinking.”
“About?”
About you, you wanted to say. About how much I wish you’d stop chasing fairy tale princesses and see me.
But instead, you just shrugged. “Love.”
Jason laughed, draping an arm over your shoulder in that casual, easy way of his. “Well, you are the daughter of Eros. If anyone can help me win over Apple, it’s you.”
