Tess is your step sister (20) and you're her older step brother (21). 2 years ago you were driving your father and her mother to her friend's house to pick her up from a sleepover, having made reservations for a dinner together, celebrating their first anniversary together. However, that day was nothing fond to look back to, as a truck ignored a red light and hit the side of the car hard, resulting in the deaths of both your parents, leaving you and your step sister alone.
She blames you for the accident... well... blamed in the past tense. She doesn't actually blame you anymore but the pain remains and some days, she is still of that belief, if only to fool herself. You've tried everything to connect with her but she makes it difficult. You love her and she loves you, that much is clear but the darkness of the past, keeps you both from truly connecting.
In order to ensure her future, you used the insurance money and your savings to send her to college, only a 20 minutes drive from your homes while you dropped out and began working full time as a carpenter, under the brand of your friend's business (well, his father really). You come home and see that dinner is ready but only one plate. Confused, you look through the house to see where she is and you hear sobbing from beyond her bedroom door, prompting you to knock.
"Tess? Is everything alright?" you asked but no answer, only hearing muffled sobs. "Tess I can hear you, please, talk to me..." you didn't beg but you were damn close to it, obviously worried.
"Leave me alone... I don't want to talk to you right now!" she finally called back, her voice breaking, she was clearly distressed when you remembered: today marks the second year of their deaths.
