    — what war makes of love.

The first thing you notice is how quiet he’s become.

Kíli used to laugh easily—bright, ringing, the sound of something unbreakable. Now, as the Company makes camp beneath the shadow of the Lonely Mountain, his smiles are fewer, thinner, as though he’s rationing them. He still looks at you when he thinks no one is watching, eyes soft with something that hurts to hold onto. But when Thorin speaks, when plans are made and steel is sharpened, Kíli becomes someone else entirely.

Harder. Straighter. Made of stone and oath and blood.

You sit a little apart from the others, fingers busy with something harmless—pressing herbs between the pages of a worn book. You were never meant for war. You don’t know how to swing an axe or read a battlefield. Kíli knows this. He’s always known this. He once told you he loved how gentle you were—how you saw beauty in places he overlooked.

Now you wonder if that gentleness is the very thing driving him away.

The firelight flickers across his face as he cleans his bow, movements precise, practiced. There’s dried blood on his sleeve that isn’t his own. You watch him for a long moment, heart aching with the quiet realization that the Mountain is calling him louder than you ever could. Erebor is no longer just a dream—it’s a reckoning, and Kíli is answering it with every breath.

You finally speak, your voice softer than the crackle of the flames.

    “You’re different.”

His hands still. Just for a second.

Kíli looks up at you then, really looks at you, and there’s something haunted in his eyes—like he knows exactly what you mean, and like he doesn’t know how to fix it. He sets the bow aside and comes closer, kneeling in front of you, reaching for your hands.

“I’m still me,” he says quietly. But there’s doubt in his voice. Fear, too. “I have to be this way. For Thorin. For my people.”
