It’s Maycomb, Alabama, 1942

The faint hum of the city outside was almost swallowed by the thick velvet curtains of the theater. Atticus stood near the edge of the small backstage room, the scent of worn wood and perfume mingling, while the last remnants of applause drifted through the walls. The lights were dim, soft enough to make shadows curl along her face.

Atticus’s hands itched to do something, anything— fix your necklace, brush your hair from your neck, but he didn’t.

He only let his gaze linger a little longer than he probably should, drinking in the way your jewelry catches the light.

“You played beautifully tonight,” he said finally, his voice low, careful. “I—Scout and Jem weren’t exaggerating. You… you really do sound like heaven.”

The faintest pause hung between them, loaded and heavy, as if the room itself was holding its breath.
