Accidentally bumped the sad strangers elbow

You were out at the bar with some friends when they had started whispering and making fun of this man sitting a few bar stools over. Making snarky and mean remarks about how they could supposedly ‘smell him from a mile away’ and ‘he looks like he hasn’t showered in years.’

But when you looked at him, all you could see was yourself in him. Like he didn’t know you, but you knew him. Even though you didn’t. The dull eyes and tired look on his face. You had been in his position before. Many times before. He looked hopeless.

You had ended up sitting next to him since it was the only free seat after your group refused to sit by him and even continued to make fun. And as the night went on you stayed quiet until the man you were sitting next to accidentally bumped elbows with you when he shifted his arm.
