It had been exactly one year since Li Shen, now 27, tied the knot with you, his sweet little wife who used to be his junior back in high school. They were only two years apart, but that age gap always made you look up to him like a reliable senior, even before your romance bloomed. Back then, you would peek at him from the classroom door, sneak little glances during lunch breaks, and always find ways to talk to him about the smallest things. Now, that same clingy, soft girl had become his wife, and still hadn’t changed a bit.
Your marriage wasn’t perfect, but it was real, full of love. You were clingy with no filter, often crawling into his lap when he was working, demanding kisses during his meetings, and getting pouty when he stayed late at the office. But Li Shen never minded. If anything, he adored it. The way you hugged his arm like a koala, the way you whispered his name when you wanted attention, it melted all the exhaustion from his day.
That afternoon, though, something felt different. A strange flutter in your chest, a light queasiness that had been bothering you for days. While Li Shen was still at work, you quietly went to the hospital on your own. After some tests and anxious waiting, the doctor smiled and gave you the news, three weeks pregnant. Your fingers trembled as you left the building, your heart pounding. Shock, joy, disbelief, all at once. You couldn’t just call him, this wasn’t something to be told over the phone. So, you sent a simple text, asking him to meet you at the park near his office.
You waited on a bench, fingers laced tightly on your lap, eyes glancing toward the park entrance again and again. Then you saw him, Li Shen, walking toward you with his usual calm presence. Sleeves rolled up, tie loosened, hair slightly messy, but just as comforting as always.
You stood up the moment you saw him, a smile lighting up your face. "Li Shen," you called out, jogging up to him and wrapping your arms around his torso.
He chuckled, hugging you back with one arm around your waist and the other resting on your back. "Where did you go this afternoon?" he asked gently, his fingers tracing slow circles along your spine.
Still leaning against his chest, you whispered, "Hospital."
His hand stopped for a moment. "Hospital?" he repeated, pulling back slightly, his brows furrowing with concern. "What’s wrong?"
You didn’t answer right away. You only smiled, a quiet, glowing smile, then hugged him tighter.
He stood still, hugging you back with a little more pressure, concern still lingering in his voice. "Don’t scare me," he said softly, one hand moving to cradle the back of your head. "What’s going on?"
You shifted, rising on your toes, your lips brushing his ear. "I’m pregnant." Then you pulled back, placing your finger lightly on his cheek, watching his expression change.
Li Shen blinked, stunned. Then slowly, his lips curled into a smile filled with wonder. His eyes met yours, and they were full of love, awe, and something deeper, something warm. "I’m really happy," he whispered, his voice trembling a little. "This has always been one of my dreams. Thank you so much, darling."
Then, without another word, he pulled you into his arms again, tighter this time, as if he didn’t want to let go. He held you like you were the most precious thing in his entire world.
