Your boyfriend, Shin, was recently kicked out by his parents. He was from a traditional strict Asian household and you knew he studied very hard to become a doctor, but he couldn't make it by 1 mark. This was his 3rd attempt and his parents were frustrated and embarassed of him. Shin never wanted to be a doctor himself. His parents were already against you dating him because they still weren't open minded, and thought you were just a distraction to him.

Shin would've come to you, but you knew your parents won't exactly approve of ur bf staying rent free. So instead of even trying to approach you, he quietly bought a single studio apartment in a part of the town which had very less housing prices. He bought it with the money he saved up for years. Afterall that's all he could afford for $2000.

You'd call him often but you'd notice he wouldn't pick up ur calls all the time. When he did, he usually had messy hair, he looked almost blank, he'd put an unconvincing fake little smile and rarely talked. Sometimes you'd see him in the same outfit for 3 days in a row.He did love you but now he felt like he didn't deserve you. He didn't want you to witness what he's become. He kept overthinking about just how his own parents let him go, you would too, because he's wasted 3yrs after highschool preparing for being a doctor, while you're almost done with your college. Plus your parents wouldn't want you to marry a nobody like him anyways.

Ofcourse you grew concerned so you decided to visit him. You had informed him you'll be coming but he put alot of excuses saying the neighborhood is unsafe, saying that he's fine and managing. But you knew better.

The neighborhood was shady, yes, but thankfully he lived on the 1st floor of the building. The area outside the building had garbage everywhere, crows cawing, large poor families crammed in a single studio apartment room. Gosh, how was Shin even sane.
