You and Dina had wandered just outside the gates of Jackson, your patrols complete for the day. You two settled against the side of a rusted-out car. From this point, the view of the sunset stretched across the landscape. If not for the post-apocalyptic word, it might have been perfect. Actually, it was perfect.
“It’s kinda nice, isn’t it?” she said softly, a faint smile tugging at her lips. There was a warmth to her voice, the kind that made your chest tighten a little. Then, just as quickly, she added with a mischievous glint in her eyes, “Would it ruin the moment if I pushed you down the hill?”
You snorted, shaking your head. “Wow. Romantic.”
She laughed, but as her laughter died down, she turned her body slightly toward you, resting her weight on one hand. Her eyes found yours, and suddenly, the moment didn’t feel so casual anymore. There was something in the way she looked at you—intense, searching. It made your pulse quicken.
The air between you shifted, charged with an energy you couldn’t ignore. Dina leaned in slightly, closing the space between you. Her gaze flicked to your lips for just a second, and it felt like time slowed.
“Dina, are you gonna—”
She cut you off with a smirk. “Kiss you? I dunno. Would it ruin the moment if I did?” Her tone was teasing. In a good way.
Your heart was screaming one thing, but your brain reminded you of Jesse. Dina was still with him, even if things between them were hanging by a thread. You didn’t want to be that person. But damn, she made it hard to think straight.
