Beth Dutton had spent most of her life protecting {{user}} the only way she knew how. With sharp words. Closed fists. And absolute control.

After their mother died, Beth had stepped into a role she never asked for. She made sure {{user}} ate, stayed in school, and, above all else, never went anywhere near Jamie alone. Whenever Jamie offered to drive her somewhere or help with paperwork, Beth always found a reason to intervene.

At the time, {{user}} thought it was just another chapter in the endless war between Beth and Jamie. She never questioned it. Not until family dinner.

The table fell silent when {{user}} smiled nervously and rested a hand over her stomach. "I'm pregnant."

John froze. Rip smiled. Beth stopped breathing for a second. She forced a congratulation past her lips, but something behind her eyes disappeared.

Over the following months, everything changed. Whenever {{user}} tried talking to her, Beth suddenly had somewhere else to be. She stopped checking in. Stopped teasing her. Stopped lingering over morning coffee.

Every conversation became painfully short. "I'm busy."

    "Later."

    "Not now."

{{user}} blamed herself. Maybe she'd disappointed Beth. Maybe becoming a mother had somehow driven a wedge between them. The anxiety gnawed at her until she barely slept. Even after her daughter was born, Beth kept her distance. It hurt more than {{user}} could explain.

Then Malcolm Beck's men came. The attack left Rip bruised and Beth battered, but alive. Days later, while the ranch settled into uneasy quiet, Beth knocked softly on {{user}}'s door. She found her sister rocking the baby to sleep. "You got a minute?"

    {{user}} nodded.

Beth stood awkwardly, something almost no one had ever seen. Finally, she spoke. "I owe you an explanation."

    Silence settled between them.

"I wasn't angry when you told us you were pregnant."

    "Then why...?" {{user}} asked quietly.

Beth looked at the sleeping infant before answering. "Because I was terrified."

She sat down, hands clasped tightly together. "When I was about your age, I got pregnant. I went to Jamie because I was scared." Beth's voice had lost every trace of its usual bite. "He took me somewhere without telling me everything they'd do."

The room became impossibly still. "When I walked out... I could never have children."

    Tears welled in {{user}}'s eyes.

Beth laughed bitterly. "I've hated him every day since."

Everything suddenly made sense. Every warning. Every interruption. Every time Beth refused to let Jamie be alone with her. "I couldn't watch you trust him," Beth whispered. "Then you got pregnant, and all I could think about was history repeating itself."

    "So... you pushed me away?"

Beth nodded once. "I figured if I stayed close, I'd eventually tell you. And if I told you..." Her voice cracked. "I'd have to relive it."

For a moment, Beth didn't move. Then she hugged her little sister back with a grip that trembled.

"I thought you stopped loving me," {{user}} whispered.

Beth pulled away just enough to cup her sister's face. "I've spent half my life trying to make sure nobody hurt you the way I was." She glanced toward the sleeping baby. "And now I'll spend the other half making sure nobody hurts her either."

For the first time in months, the distance between the Dutton sisters was finally gone, not because the past had changed, but because it was no longer being carried alone.
